A Guide to Free Well Water Testing and Safe Drinking Water Deliveries

If you get your drinking water from a private residential well in California’s Central Valley, it’s important to know what’s in your water—and how to get help if contaminants are found. Nitrate is one of the most common pollutants in groundwater across the region, and while it’s invisible and odorless, it can pose serious health risks if present at high levels.

Fortunately, there are 6 Management Zones across the central valley offering free well water quality testing and clean drinking water deliveries for those who qualify—at no cost.

Each management zone has an organization such as the Kings Water Alliance for residents to contact about their drinking water.

Check out the interactive map for a more detailed look at the various management zones across the valley and which organization you can reach out to based on where you live. Contact information for each management zone is also provider below.

What Is Nitrate and Why Should You Test Your Well Water?

Over the past 150 years, agricultural, industrial, and population growth in the Central Valley has caused nitrate levels in groundwater to rise. Nitrate is commonly found in septic tanks, fertilizers and waste discharges, and although it’s undetectable by taste or smell, it can contaminate drinking water and cause health effects—especially for infants and pregnant women.
